The efficiency argument got harder to ignore
When budgets tighten, broad demand generation becomes difficult to justify. "We reached 200,000 people" is a harder sell when leadership asks how many of those people were actually potential customers. ABM's pitch (we spent money on exactly these 300 accounts, here's what happened) is a simpler story to tell and a simpler result to defend.
Buyer behavior forced the shift
Modern B2B buyers do most of their research before talking to a vendor. Some studies put it at 60 to 70% of the decision made before first contact. In that environment, being invisible to your target accounts until they're ready to raise their hand is a losing strategy. ABM's always-on presence model, showing up for target accounts continuously, aligns better with how buying actually happens now.
Global scale changed the calculus
For companies selling across multiple regions, broad demand gen becomes increasingly inefficient. Different markets, different channels, different content needs: the cost of spray-and-pray at global scale adds up fast. ABM's focused model scales more efficiently internationally: deeper investment in fewer, higher-fit accounts, with messaging built for those accounts specifically.
The pipeline quality problem
Volume-driven lead generation creates a volume-driven pipeline: lots of leads, uneven quality, sales teams spending significant time qualifying out the bad ones. ABM pipelines are smaller by design, but the accounts in them tend to be better fits, further along in their evaluation, and more likely to close.
The shift isn't total
Few serious B2B companies are abandoning demand generation entirely. It still builds broad market awareness and fills the top of the funnel in ways ABM isn't designed to. What's changing is the proportion: more intentional budget behind fewer, better-chosen accounts; less spray-and-pray; more coordination between the channels chasing the same targets.
Budget follows results, and ABM's results, when executed well, are traceable in a way that broad demand generation often isn't.
